QuickBooks Desktop No Longer Available for New Subscriptions after July 2024

By Nancy Orben, CPA, Senior Manager at Blue & Co.

Intuit has announced an official cutoff date for new purchases of QuickBooks Desktop. How does this effect you? If your company is using Desktop 2022 or later, you are already under Intuit’s subscription model and we anticipate you will be able to renew your license annually through at least 2027.

If you are using Desktop 2021 or prior, your last chance to purchase an updated subscription version will be July 2024. It’s important to keep in mind that Intuit typically sunsets a product after three years, so those of you on Desktop 2021 and prior will lose support and critical security updates as early as 2024.

After July 2024, you will only be able to purchase the Enterprise version of QuickBooks Desktop if you do not already own QuickBooks Desktop 2022 or later, which has a higher cost and is potentially more robust than you need if you aren’t using inventory.

The good news: we can help you evaluate whether you are a good fit to transition from Desktop to QuickBooks Online. If you decide to move forward, we can ensure that all of your data is migrated properly and provide training to help minimize disruption to your staff and operations.

We can also help you reduce the size of your file if you want to start fresh! We strongly encourage you to reach out as far in advance as possible to avoid rushing this process under a deadline in future years. Please reach out with any questions to your Blue contact or one of Blue’s QuickBooks ProAdvisors.

QuickBooks Desktop Payroll

QuickBooks also began ending support for several desktop payroll products – Standard and Basic payroll in December of 2023. If you are using one of these payroll products, you need to give consent to move your payroll to their Enhanced product. If you do not give your consent, your payroll service will be discontinued. See this article for more details.
